Supra is a sports car that is an upper rank model of Toyota 86.

The Supra brand has been revived for the first time in 17 years since the end of the sales of A80 type.

The above picture is Toyota GR Supra of die cast miniature car toy “Tomica”, which was released by TOMY COMPANY,LTD on August 17, 2019 in Japan.

It reproduces the body color of “Prominence Red”.

It is a calmer color look than seen in the picture, and has a suitable atmosphere for Toyota’s flagship sports car.

TOYOTA GR SUPRA FRONT VIEWGR Supra adopts a headlamp with 6 LED lens units.

In addition, the line-emitting LED lamp that combines the functions of a clearance lamp and a turn signal lamp is mounted at the bottom, giving off a strong personality.

The whole headlight part of this miniature car is finished with silver paint.

Tomica is an inexpensive miniature car toy for children, so it can’t be helped, but I feel like it would have been better if it had been used a slightly darker paint.

The bumper of GR Supra has a very aggressive design as well as the headlights.

This miniature car toy reproduces the bumper opening fairly accurately due to the die-cast mold shape.

Furthermore, since the opening is painted in black, it is finished so realistic.

TOYOTA GR SUPRA SIDE VIEWGR Supra adopts the typical FR sports car’s styling called “Long Nose and Short Deck” where the bonnet is long and the driver sits just before the rear tire.

The wheelbase is 2470mm, 100mm shorter than Toyota 86.

Although the volume feeling of the second half of the body seems slightly poor, the overall finish of this miniature car’s side view is pretty well.

The side skirt and front lip spoiler are reproduced with the black underparts.

TOYOTA GR SUPRA REAR VIEWThe rear style of GR Supra emphasizes the feeling of the powerful stability by the large swollen fender and the narrow duck tail spoiler.

In addition, aerodynamic performance has been enhanced by adopting the “Double bubble roof” with a recessed central part of the roof.

The rear part of this miniature car toy is not as sharp as the actual car, but it has a half-decent powerful finish.

Seeing from the back, you can confirm the dent in the center of the roof.

The central Toyota emblem, the Supra emblem below it, and the GR emblem on the lower right are accurately reproduced by printing.

On the other hand, the rear combination lamp is painted in red, but it can be differentiated by using a different red paint from the body color.

The scale of this die-cast miniature car toy is 1/60, and the actual size is about 73mm.

【About actual TOYOTA SUPRA】

Supra is Toyota’s flagship sports car, and has been the successor model of Celica XX in Japan.

The Sales ended in 2002, but the new Supra revived in 2019.

◆ The 1st Generation TOYOTA SUPRA [Name in Japan: CELICA XX] (A40 type / A50 type) 1978-1981

Toyota had been manufacturing and selling Celica, the specialty car equipped with a 4-cylinder engine since 1970.

At that time, Nissan Fairlady Z was popular in North America, and Toyota released Celica XX with a 6-cylinder engine as a competing car in 1978.

However, in the United States, the list of X indicated the degree of adult designation of the movie at that time, so the exported car was released as Toyota Supra.

Therefore, Celica XX became the car name exclusively for Japan.

Rick Jason, who had appeared on American popular drama “Combat!”, was appointed in the CM of Celica XX in Japan.

The 1st generation Supra (Celica XX) extended the front nose of the A40 type Celica equipped with a 4-cylinder engine, and equipped with a 6-cylinder engine.

The 2.0-liter in-line 6-cylinder SOHC engine (M-EU type) and the 2.6 liter SOHC engine (4M-EU type) were prepared.

Supra underwent the minor model change in 1980 and shifted to A50 type, and the 2.8-liter in-line 6-cylinder SOHC engine (5M-EU type) was installed in place of the 4M-EU type.

◆ The 2nd generation TOYOTA SUPRA [Name in Japan: CELICA XX] (A60 type) 1981-1986

Supra (Celica XX) underwent the full model change in 1981 and became the second generation (A60 type).

The 2nd generation Supra adopting the retractable headlight was acquiring excellent aerodynamic characteristics like a Cd value of 0.35.

The 2800GT equipped with the 2.8-liter DOHC engine (5M-GEU) recorded a maximum speed of 200 Km / h over.

In 1982, “Turbo S / G” equipped with the 2.0-liter SOHC turbo (M-TEU type) and “2000GT” equipped with the 2.0-liter DOHC 24 valve engine (1G-GEU type) were added.

At the CM of Celica XX in Japan, Collin Chapman, Lotus’ founder, was appointed.

◆ The 3rd generation TOYOTA SUPRA (A70 type) 1986-1993

Supra underwent the full model change in 1986 and became the 3rd generation (A70 type).

Since the A70 type was completely separated from Celica, the car name “Supra” was used also in Japan.

Therefore, A70 type is the 3rd generation model, but in Japan it is treated as the 1st generation Supra.

The A70 type Supra had used a platform common with Toyota’s luxury specialty car Soarer and equipped with a 2.0-liter and a 3.0-liter engine.

The “SUPRA 2.5GT Twin Turbo” equipped with the 2.5-liter twin turbo engine (1JZ-GTE type) that generated 280 PS, which was the domestic voluntary regulation at that time, was added at the minor change in 1990.

◆ The 4th generation TOYOTA SUPRA (A80 type) 1993-2002

The 4th generation Supra (A80 type) was released at the Detroit Motor Show in 1993, and sales began in May of the same year.

In the early 1990s when A80 type Supra appeared, many large sports cars existed in Japan.

Nissan Fairlady Z underwent the full model change in 1989, Z32 type which adopted the low and wide body appeared.

In the following year, Honda NSX (NA1 type) of all aluminum body and Mitsubishi GTO of 4WD sports car were put on sale.

In 1991, Mazda Savanna RX-7 equipped with a rotary engine underwent the full model change, and FD3S type appeared as Infini RX-7.

Also, the ultimate 4WD sports car, Nissan Skyline GT-R has been released in 1989 for R32 type and in 1995 for R33 type.

“THE SPORTS OF TOYOTA” was used as the catch phrase of the 4th generation Supra .

A80 type adopted a curved surface and a glamorous body, and the Cd value reached 0.30.

The engine displacement was 3.0-liter and the newly developed electronic control sub throttle system “ETCS” was installed.

Initially, A80 type Supra was set up with 3 grades, “SZ” equipped with the naturally aspirated engine (2JZ-GE type), “RZ” equipped with the twin turbo engine (2JZ-GTE type), and “GZ” of luxury specification.

In addition, SZ and GZ also had the aero top specification.

It shares many components with Toyota Soarer (Z30 type) which appeared in 1991, and RZ was equipped with the shock absorber made by Bilstein.

In addition, the MT car of Supra RZ adopted 6MT that was for the first time as the domestic passenger cars in Japan.

It was jointly developed with Getrag.

A80 type Supra underwent the minor change frequently in order to compete against rival cars.

But production was terminated in 2002, as it was not able to respond to the “2000 exhaust gas regulation”.

◆ The 5th generation TOYOTA SUPRA (DB type) 2019

The 5th generation Toyota Supra (DB type) was launched on May 17, 2019, for the first time in 17 years since the end of sales of the A80 type.

Toyota has started accepting reservations in March.

However, due to popularity beyond expectations, delivery within the year of the DB type Supra has become a difficult situation.

The DB type Supra is a jointly developed vehicle with BMW, which has a technical partnership with Toyota since 2011.

Therefore, it shares the platform, such as the engine and chassis that is the basis of the vehicle configuration, with the 3rd generation BMW Z4 (G29 type).

However, because the development was done by Toyota and BMW respectively, Supra and Z4 are finished in different models.

As well as Z4, the production of the vehicle takes place at Magna Steyr, the Austrian car manufacturer.

On the other hand, sales are carried out by GR, the Toyota sports car brand.

The 5th generation Supra is the first monopoly sales model for GR, also called as the “Toyota GR Supra” (this name is also adopted by Tomica’s No.117 miniature car).

At the 5th generation Supra, there are grades that are equipped with an in-line 6-cylinder engine which inherits the tradition ever and a compact and light-weight in-line 4-cylinder engine.

The RZ grade is equipped with the B58 type 3.0-liter in-line 6-cylinder twin-scroll turbo engine that demonstrates overwhelming power and direct response over the entire range from low rotating range to high rotating range.

The SZ-R grade is equipped with a high-power specification of the B48 type 2.0-liter in-line 4-cylinder twin-scroll turbo engine.

The high-power specification engine of SZ-R generates 258 horsepower, enabling a sporty driving experience.

On the other hand, SZ grade is equipped with the standard specification of B48 type engine.

Even the standard specification engine generates 197 horsepower, and you can  casually enjoy the refreshing driving from the town use to the highway.

The body of the 5th generation Supra has a framework structure using aluminum and steel, achieving both weight reduction and strengthening of the body rigidity at the same time.

By reducing body twisting and subtle fluctuations, it maximizes the performance of the suspension and drivetrain.

In addition, in order to improve turning performance than the predecessor model, it has become the first two-seater specification as Supra.

As a result, the wheelbase achieves 2,470 mm which is 100 mm shorter than the more compact Toyota 86, and the front-rear weight distribution ratio is 50:50.
