Porsche Boxster is an open car adopting MR layout (Midship-engine, Rear-wheel-drive layout) and is on sale from 1996.
The above picture is the 3rd generation Porsche Boxster of die cast miniature car toy “Tomica No.64” which was released by TOMY COMPANY,LTD of Japan on May 18 2013.
The 3rd generation Boxster called 981 type had option colors in addition to standard colors such as black, white, and red.
The body color of this miniature car toy is gold, it seems to be assuming the optional color “Lime gold metallic”.
Even if it says metallic, the gloss is suppressed and the overall form is also good, so this die cast miniature car has a good quality that doesn’t seem to be a toy for children.
Unlike Porsche 911 which adopted the round headlight, 981 type Boxster adopted the unique shaped headlight.
This miniature car toy expresses sporty 981 type Boxster’s headlight with silver paint.
On the other hand, the air intake in the bumper and the side turn signal lamp are represented by the shape of die casting, but are not painted.
If the air intake part was painted in black, the front view of this miniature car would be sportier.
The Porsche emblem is reproduced by printing on the front bonnet.
Although the central prancing horse that originally derived from the coat of arms of Stuttgart city is not exactly reproduced, I can sufficiently recognize that it is the Porsche emblem.
Considering that it is just a few millimeters in size, I think printing on this emblem is very good.
Since Porsche Boxster is an open car, we can see the interior well.
Sporty dashboards, new shape center console, etc., fine parts are reproduced with considerable accuracy.
Also, the edge part of the window shield is painted in the same gold color as the body color.
As a result, the atmosphere around the driver’s seat of this die cast miniature car toy is pretty close to the actual vehicle.
The air intake for cooling the engine mounted on the mid-ship is installed behind the side door.
This miniature car toy toy reproduces the air intake by the shape of die casting.
However, since it is not painted in black, the three-dimensional feel like the actual car is not reproduced.
981 type Porsche Boxster has a logo of “PORSCHE Boxster” on the rear trunk.
This die cast miniature car toy reproduces it by printing.
It is a little hard to see because silver-colored characters are printed on the gold color body.
But since the size balance and font is similar to the actual car’s logo, the finish of printing is very good.
In addition, there is a high mount stop lamp above the Boxster logo, and this miniature car expresses it by the shape of die casting.
Although the source of light is not painted in red, the slightly recessed shape is accurately reproduced.
The rear combination lamp with a three-dimensional feel has also been reproduced and painted in red.
Since some of the models in Tomica express turn signal lamp in silver, it is a bit disappointing.
Also, although it is a little difficult to recognize, rough shapes of the roll bars behind the seat are reproduced.
The scale of this die cast miniature car toy is 1/64, and the actual size is about 68mm.
Pseudo suspension which is familiar to sports cars of Tomica, is also set up to this model.
The 1st generation Porsche Boxster (986 type) was developed based on the concept car “Prototype Boxster” announced at the Detroit Auto Show in 1993, and released in 1996.
Although 986 type Boxster the open car with the electric soft top, it shared many parts with 996 type Porsche 911.
The 2.5-liter horizontally opposed 6-cylinder engine mounted on the midship generated 204 PS (150 kW) / 6000 rpm, 25.0 kg · m (245 N · m) / 4500 rpm.
The 986 Boxster released in 1999 expanded the displacement to 2.7-liter, and the maximum output increased to 220 PS.
At the same time, the high-performance version of Porsche Boxster S was added.
The 3.2-liter horizontally opposed 6-cylinder engine for Boxster S generated 252 PS (185 kW) / 6250 rpm, 31.1 kg · m (305.0 N · m) / 4500 rpm.
The 2nd generation Porsche Boxster (987 type) was developed in parallel with 997 type Porsche 911 and was released in 2004.
As well as the predecessor model, Boxster was equipped with 2.7-liter and Boxster S was equipped with 3.2-liter horizontally opposed 6-cylinder engine.
But the maximum output increased to 240 PS, 280 PS respectively.
The opening and closing of the soft top was completed in 12 seconds and could also be performed during driving if it was less than 50 km / h.
The PSM (Porsche Stability Management System) of the sideslip prevention system became standard equipment in 987 type Boxster.
Also, Porsche Cayman, the closed body version of 987 type Boxster, was released in 2005.
The 3rd generation Porsche Boxster (981 type) was developed by sharing about 50% parts with 991 type Porsche 911 and released in 2012.
The die cast miniature car toy introduced on this page is 981 type Porsche Boxster.
The late type of 987 type Boxster had a 2.9-liter engine, but the engine for 981 type Boxster was reduced to 2.7-liter.
However, due to improvements in compression ratio etc., the maximum output increased to 195 kW (265 PS) with 10 PS up and the maximum torque to 280 Nm.
Meanwhile, the 3.4-liter horizontally opposed 6-cylinder engine for Boxster S was also improved and generated 232 kW (315 ps) / 6700 rpm, 360 Nm (36.7 kgm) / 4500 – 5800 rpm.
981 type Boxster adopted the lightweight body using aluminum for 47% of the chassis.
And the wheelbase was extended by 60 mm and the tread expanded both front and rear.
In addition, the PDK specification car adopted the “coasting function” which disconnects the clutch and runs idle when cruising.
Furthermore, low fuel consumption technologies like the idling stop function were actively adopted.
It was announced on December 10 2015 that it will be changed from the horizontally opposed 6-cylinder naturally aspirated engine to the horizontally opposed 4-cylinder turbo engine so far.
Along with this, the model name has also been changed to “718 Boxster” and “718 Cayman”.
Actually, although 718 Boxster is a minor change model of 918 type, everything was newly designed except for the roof and the glass part etc.
The name of 718 derives from the horizontally opposed 4 cylinder engine which was mounted in the racing car “Porsche 718” which was active at various races in 1950s and 1960s.
The 2.0-liter horizontally opposed 4-cylinder engine mounted on the 718 Boxster generates 220 kW (300 PS) / 6500 rpm, 380 Nm / 1950 – 4500 rpm.
Although the displacement has become smaller, both fuel efficiency and performance have been improved by adding the turbocharger.
On the other hand, the 2.5-liter horizontally opposed 4-cylinder engine mounted on the high performance version “718 Boxster S” generates 257 kW (350 PS) / 6500 rpm, 420 Nm / 1900 – 4500 rpm.
