Honda S660 is lightweight 2-seater sports car of Japanese “Kei Jidosha（軽自動車）” standard.
“Kei Jidosha” is a unique standard in Japanese mini vehicles.
Maintenance costs(for example automobile tax, etc.) of Kei Jidosha are lower than ordinary cars.
[Standard of Kei Jidosha]
· Displacement capacity 0.66-liter or less
· Length 3.4 m or less
· Width 1.48 m or less
· Height 2.0 m or less
The above picture is S660 of die cast miniature car toy “Tomica”, which was released by TOMY COMPANY,LTD of Japan on January 16, 2016.
Pseudo suspension which is familiar to sports cars of Tomica, is also set up to this model.
Unfortunately, S660 of Tomica can only become the open style, it can’t become the state with the soft top closed.
The color is Premium Star White Pearl that is lineuped to the real Honda S660.
By the way, as Premium Star White Pearl is a special paint color, the selling price of the actual car will be 30,000 yen higher than usual color.
While Tomica is a die cast miniature car model, it is originally a toy for children, so texture is not so high.
However, I think it is well reproducing the actual car.
Particularly, the side view of this Tomica is so sporty and looks like real S660.
It is a pity that upper soft top can’t be detached.
The top of S660 is Targa top and upper soft top is removed by winded up from side.
The area of upper soft top part is small, and it might be difficult for Tomica to reproduce desorption.
As S660 is open car, we can see the interior well.
The center console that wraps around the driver is well reproduced in this die cast miniature car.
On the other hand, Tomica is difficult to finish details precisely due to the low price of 450 yen, rear light is painted only by red.
As the real S660 rear combination lamp is very cool, it’s a little disappointing part.
The scale of this die cast miniature car toy is 1/56, and the actual is about 60 mm.
【About actual HONDA S660】
◆HONDA S660 2015-present
Honda S660 was released in April 2015 in Japan.
Honda had been selling open 2-seater sports car of mini vehicle (“Kei Jidosha”) standard, “Beat” from 1991 to 1998, but revived sports car of mini vehicle, “S660” for the first time in about 17 years.
Honda had been selling sports cars using S to an initial since long time ago.
In addition to commercially available S500, S600, S800, S2000, there was S360 which was not released only by concept cars.
By the way, the driving methods are different each other.
Honda S500, S600, S800, S2000 are FR (Front-engine, rear-wheel-drive layout), Honda Beat and S660 are MR (Mid-engine, rear-wheel-drive layout).
As most of Honda cars are FF（Front-engine, front-wheel-drive layout）, sports cars of S series are very special.
Honda Beat was equipped with 0.66-liter of naturally aspirated engine (E07A type) generating 64 PS / 8,100 rpm, 6.1 kgf · m / 7,000 rpm.
Although Beat was sold with a catch phrase “Midship · Amusement”, it was recognized as a sports car from its styling, and power shortage was pointed out.
On the other hand, 0.66-liter turbo engine (S07A type) that generates 47 kW (64 PS) / 6,000 rpm, 104 N · m (10.6 kg · m) / 2,600 rpm is mounted in the Honda S660.
While the same displacement, the turbo charger has greatly increased the torque, and S660 is evaluated as a small real sports car.
In addition, although the transmission of Honda Beat was 5MT, S660 adopted 6MT and cars with CVT are also on sale.
In the driving mechanism, Honda adopted the handling support system “Agile Handling Assist”, which controls brakes with high precision and enhances line traceability, to S660 for the first time as Mini Vehicle.
Measurement results of Japan’s fuel economy standard JC08 mode fuel efficiency set by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, the 6MT car per liter is 21.2 km, and the CVT car is 24.2 km, which is equivalent to the fuel economy of the eco car.
As for the price at the time of launch of the Honda S660, basic β type was 1,833,334 yen and α type equipped with cruise control and stainless steel sports pedals was 2,018,519 yen.
The rival of Honda S660 is Daihatsu Copen.
Copen is also open 2-seater sports car of the mini vehicle (“Kei Jidosha”) standard, carrying 0.66-liter turbo engine that generates 47 kW (64 PS) / 6,400 rpm, 92 N · m (9.4 kgf · m) / 3,200 rpm.
Measurement results with JC08 mode fuel consumption are 22.2 km for 5MT car per liter, 25.2 km for CVT car and running performance is almost equal to S660.
The difference is the driving method, Daihatsu Copen adopts FF (Front-engine, front-wheel-drive layout).
